I am looking for a complete German grammar book, where everything would be explained for all levels in English. At the moment I am finding a German grammar book with exercises or German grammar for specific levels. But I would prefer complete German grammar for all levels, the best with detailed descriptions (not the short books using a lot of grammar-specific terms - I am not the youngest to remember what such grammar terms mean, so I would prefer a bigger book, where everything is explained in detail.)

PS: I have seen some PDFs in another thread and even though they have a nice structure, they don't mention everything. The "German grammar in use" style is good for practicing grammar, but I am missing a reference book (preferably in English), where I can find answers to different grammatical questions I could have.

I do not know any grammar book written in English. But there is one in German, which I can recommend if you like grammar:It is called "Grammatik aktiv", the publisher is "Cornelsen".It consists of 2 books, each comes together with a CD.

This book can serve as a reference for the complete German grammar. It is designed to provide detailed explanations of the various aspects of German grammar as well as numerous examples that illustrate how the grammar functions in practical sentences. Each chapter contains a variety of exercises for practice with the covered grammar topics.

The exercises take a variety of forms. Some are conjugations of an isolated verb in any of the tenses. Some exercises are completions that need a single word or short phrase, and others may require writing a complete sentence. Some chapters have multiple-choice exercises, which require the reader to demonstrate not only the understanding of a grammatical concept but also how that concept is correctly applied in a sentence.

Most chapters have a single major grammatical topic. However, some chapters also include a secondary topic that is often linked in some manner to the major topic. The earliest chapters contain the topics that are appropriate for readers who have limited experience with German, for example, conjugations of verbs and basic declensions. The later chapters introduce structures that require an intermediate level of understanding of German grammar, such as the passive voice or the subjunctive mood.

For beginning to intermediate German language learners, getting a handle on German grammar is the key to communicating correctly and effectively. In Practice Makes Perfect: Complete German Grammar, you'll find everything you need, all in one place--instruction, clear explanations, and extensive exercises--to build your knowledge and communicate more effectively in German.
